VTT is putting together a jointly funded shared benefit project to upscale applications of VTT's new bioplastic material Thermocell. VTT will provide the material and knowhow – will you be the one to test it in your environment? Consortium is open until the end of June 2019.
Thermocell is a recyclable cellulose-based material that is 100 % biobased and thermoformable without external plasticizers. It is water vapour resistant and it has better properties than existing biobased plastics and will be price competitive with existing cellulose-based plastics. It comes in the form of granulate and/or filament, and the process has reduced chemical consumption and it can be manufactured with existing machinery. The technologies are patented by VTT.
We are looking for 7-8 partners primarily from brand owners and converters. VTT will provide 500 kg of material to carry out the scale up of applications. There is a whole range of applications that are potential for Thermocell. From these, we are going to pick 1-2 applications to scale up. You have the chance to affect and contribute to which application is commercialized first.

We aim speed up commercialization of this new material by lowering the economical risk and technology risk. You would gain first hand knowledge by Following the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's awarded accelerated material R&D programme. The price is 90 k€/partner and the project would start in September 2019 lasting 18 months. VTT will invest 300 k€.
