TWO NEW ARTICLES: Polyphenol-rich diet – compliance biomarkers and health benefits

Two articles have been published related to polyphenol-rich diet from the results of EC funded project EtherPaths (FP7-KBBE-222639) as collaboration between VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and "Federico II" University in Napels, Italy.

Claudia Vetrani, Angela Rivellese, Giovanni Annuzzi, Ismo Mattila, Emmanuelle Meudec, Tuulia Hyötyläinen, Matej Oresic and Anna-Marja Aura published an article titled Phenolic metabolites as compliance biomarker for polyphenol intake in a randomized controlled human intervention, which showed that microbial metabolites, hydroxylated phenolic acids with C1-C3 side-chains derived from the polyphenol-rich foods and beverages, are significantly increased in 24-h-urine in the group consuming polyphenol-rich diet. Urinary excretion provides a profile, which serves as a compliance biomarker of polyphenol-rich diet.

Giovanni Annuzzi, Lutgarda Bozzetto, Giuseppina Costabile, Roslabe Giacco, Anna Magnione, Gaia Anniballi, Marilena Vitale, Claudia Vetrani, Giuseppina Della Corte, Fabrizio Pasanisi, Gabriele Riccardi and Angela Rivellese published an article from the same human intervention titled: Diets naturally rich in polyphenols improve fasting and postprandial dyslipidemia and reduce oxidative stress: a randomized controlled trial. The results indicated that polyphenol-rich diet significantly reduced fasting and postprandial triglyceride levels, large very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDLs) in plasma and urinary 8-isoprostane levels. Through the effects of postprandial lipidemia and oxidative stress, polyphenols may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
