PATHWAY-27 project aims to better understand the impact of bioactive-enriched foods on health

The general objective of PATHWAY-27 (Pivotal Assessment of the Effects of Bioactives on the Health and Wellbeing, from Human Genome to Food Industry) project addresses the exploitation of bioactive compounds as ingredients of foods that, within the common diet, could significantly benefit human health and wellbeing. The project uses three model compounds (docosahexaenoic acid, beta-glucan, and anthocyanins) and three model food matrices (bakery, dairy and egg products) to derive conclusions that would be widely applicable.

The objectives of PATHWAY-27 are to better understand the potential benefits and mechanism of action of the selected bioactive compounds and to develop improved food formulations leading to the production of bioactive-enriched foods with a scientifically demonstrated impact on health. Based on the gained knowledge on bioavailability, activity, synergism and mechanisms of action of bioactive compounds, different guidelines and best practices for undertaking intervention studies, validating innovative biomarkers, and substantiating nutritional and health claims on bioactive enriched food will be developed by the project. Particularly, specific guidelines for the food industry will be aimed at increasing the innovation potential and competitiveness of SMEs. In addition the project will support the implementation of European legislation on health and nutrition claims.

VTT is leading the work package 4: "Industrial production of PATHWAY BEF for pilot and intervention studies". The main objectives of this work package are industrial production of high-quality bioactive-enriched ingredients as well as production of the selected food products containing these ingredients. These products are delivered to pilot and intervention studies. In WP 2, VTT is involved in the development of the beta-glucan -containing bakery products as well as analyses of the content and molecular weight of beta-glucan from all of the beta-glucan -containing products.

The project is supported by the EU within the seventh framework programme and coordinated by the University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum Universitá di Bologna – UNIBO) and includes 25 partners broadly distributed in Europe: west to east, south to north Europe, including one Candidate Country (Turkey). The EU Consortium consists of different organisation types, namely: Universities, Research Institutes and SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises).
