Free school meals have a unique and long history in Finland and they are considered as a national strength. Every pupil receives a well-balanced meal every school day. The objective is to maintain and improve pupils’ health and well-being and to give them energy for their school work. Despite the good intentions, part of the school children only rarely eat the whole lunch including main course, fresh side dish, bread and milk/sour milk. Instead they eat nutritionally poor snacks or skip the lunch. The appreciation of school food is decreasing.
