7th World Congress on Polyphenols Applications was held on 6th – 7th June 2013 in Bonn (Germany). The symposium was organized by International Society of Antioxidant in Nutrition and Health (ISANH). The approximately 150 participants from Europe, Canada, USA, Morocco, Brazil, Japan, Costa Rica, Tunisia and Mexico presented 26 oral presentations and 65 posters at Collegium Leoninum. The presentations were held in an old church. Dr Anna-Marja Aura from VTT held an oral presentation titled: "Detection and Consequences of Exposure to Polyphenol-rich Foods and Beverages and their Colonic Microbial Metabolites in vivo and in vitro" describing the food-related phenolic metabolites as compliance biomarkers of dietary intake and clinical consequences in over-weight or obese subjects who had at least one biomarker of metabolic syndrome. Furthermore, the presentation showed some responses of the adipocytes after exposure to microbial metabolites of polyphenol-rich beverage. The presentation answered to the need of carefully performed human interventions and mechanistic studies taking into account the substantial polyphenol metabolism in the gut.
