4.6.2010 Thesis: Bioinformatics approaches for the analysis of lipidomics data
Lipid research has recently gained increased attention due to their involvement in numerous diseases including diabetes, obesity, atherosclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease. Modern technological advancements in mass spectrometry allow the studying of several hundreds of lipids at a time. This level of investigation not only provides insights into the specific roles of lipid molecular species in the health and disease, but also facilitates in identifying potential biomarkers for prevention and treatment of human health.
These developments, however, comes with a set of informatics challenges in terms of handling the data. The dissertation of Laxmana Rao Yetukuri mainly deals with some of the challenges associated with this kind of lipid research in the context of liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry methods. The presented informatics methods herein assist in identification of lipid species, their functional class prediction and data interpretation in biological pathway context and data analysis.
Laxmana Rao Yetukuri from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland will defend his thesis “Bioinformatics approaches for the analysis of lipidomics data” on June 11, 2010 at 12:00 o’clock at the Aalto University (Address: Otakaari 3 in Espoo, Finland). The work has been central in establishment of VTT’s metabolomics & lipidomics platforms.
