10.5.2010 Thesis: Turning biological data into useful knowledge to investigate early disease process
The size and complexity of data introduce many new challenges to biologists. The first challenge is to establish infrastructure to store and process the data. The second challenge is to establish intelligent methods capable of turning the data into knowledge. VTT’s Research Scientist Gopal Peddinti has developed methods to handle heterogeneous biological data in order to provide ways to turn the data into valuable knowledge.
Peddinti has executed his work with the means of systems biology. Systems biology is an interdisciplinary research area that benefits from the knowledge of biologists, physicists, chemists, computer scientists, and mathematicians. In the recent decades, large scale biological experimental techniques have become available, which produce large amounts of useful data.
The methods presented in the thesis have applications in a broad variety of biological research. As a specific example, the thesis presented the investigation of dynamically changing biological processes in response to oxidative stress in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Oxidative stress is a phenomenon that is implicated in a number of human diseases.
Peddinti will present his thesis on Friday, 14th May 2010, at 12:00 o’clock noon at the Aalto University School of Science and Technology (Otakaari 3 in Espoo, Finland).
