COST meeting on adipose tissue and metabolic syndrome

The final scientific meeting of COST (European cooperation in science and technology) Action (BM0602) with a topic Adipose tissue: A key target for prevention of metabolic syndrome gathered around 100 scientists interested in adipose tissue to Kuopio in August 29th-31st. The main objective of the Action has been to advance knowledge on the pathogenesis and prevention of obesity and the specific role of adipose tissue in the development of the metabolic syndrome.

This approach is driven by the hypothesis that adipose tissue is critically involved in transducing signals which mediate insulin resistance, vascular complications, beta cell dysfunction and the manifestation of type 2 diabetes. These topics were covered by many well-known speakers around the Europe. Also nutrition and lifestyle factors as a key preventive means to metabolic diseases were discussed.

VTT was represented by two excellent presentations. Professor Matej Orešič gave very high level presentation titled “Adipose tissue lipidome: benefits and costs of lipid remodelling as adaptation to acquired obesity”, and Professor Kaisa Poutanen shared her inspiring thoughts related to personalized prevention by presentation titled “Food, eating and metabolic diseases –personalized prevention”.
