Maria Lankinen represented The Sysdimet project which has been performed in co-operation with VTT and University of Eastern Finland in the 29th International Symposium on Diabetes and Nutrition. The presentation was titled “Low insulin response grain products, fish and bilberries alter glucose and lipid metabolism: A randomized, controlled trial”.
The main findings in this study were that above mentioned food components altered plasma lipidomic profile markedly and also improved glucose and insulin metabolism. Therefore, such a diet may have a beneficial effect in the efforts to prevent type 2 diabetes in high risk persons. These results will be published in PLoS ONE.
The 29th International Symposium on Diabetes and Nutrition of the Nutrition Study Group of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) was held in Rome 30th June - 2nd July 2011. Scientific program handled widely topics related to diabetes and nutrition including gene and diet interactions, physiological mechanisms, bariatric surgery and nutrient approaches in the prevention and care of diabetes. Fructose, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, different kind of proteins and grain products were food components that were mostly discussed during the symposium.
