NEW PRESENTATION: Why and how should we feed our gut microbiota?

Academy Professor Kaisa Poutanen gave a presentation about dietary fibre and how it effects on gut microbiota in Finnish Food Congress in Helsinki on 3rd of May. In her presentation she summarized current knowledge about why it is important to consume dietary fibre in adequate amount and how it can be done.

Dietary fibre, defined as non-digestible parts of plant since 1972, is still an active research topic. Especially interactions of fibre with intestinal microbiota are under intense research, and both fermentation of carbohydrates and bioconversions of associated compounds are hypothesized to contribute to alleviated inflammation linked to development of chronic diseases, and in that way promote health. As dietary fibre actually is a range of different types of substances, also here the advice to eat food from diverse sources is useful. We should anyway remember not to take care of only our energy needs, but also to feed the microbiota we are hosting.
