NEW BOOK CHAPTER: Addressing the Health Beneficial Aspects of Nutrition

Maria Lankinen and Matej Orešič from VTT wrote a book chapter titled “Addressing the Health Beneficial Aspects of Nutrition—The Example of the Obesity Epidemic” in the book “Mass Spectrometry and Nutrition Research”. In this chapter they introduce mass spectrometric impact on nutritionally actionable health aspects focusing on the global health issue of obesity.

In obese individuals, the mass of adipose tissue, which is a major endocrine organ, is increased. Therefore it is not surprising that obesity is the main risk factor for a number of metabolic abnormalities such as dyslipidemias, insulin resistance, inflammation and hypertension.Several hypotheses how the excess adiposity antagonizes insulin action in peripheral tissues, including lipotoxicity, inflammation and potential role of gut microbiota, are discussed in the chapter.

In addition examples how metabolomics and lipidomics have been applied in the nutrition science are introduced, including studies performed in co-operation with VTT and Department of Clinical Nutrition in the University of Eastern Finland. Mass spectrometry based metabolomics has revealed e.g. decreases in potentially lipotoxic lipid species after the diet rich in fatty fish and highly significant changes among the triacylglycerol molecular species containing saturated fatty acids after the diet induced weight loss.

Over all, the book focuses on the contribution of mass spectrometry to the advancement of nutrition research. It guides nutritionists to the appropriate techniques for their work and introduces analytical biochemists to new fields of application in nutrition and health.
