EATSIGNALS - more realistic picture of consumer experiences using psycho-physiological measurements

Psycho-physiology deals with relationship between bodily and mental processes. VTT EATSIGNALS project examines whether psycho-physiological measures would give additional value beyond subjective data in the evaluation of product pleasantness. The results of the study can be utilized in the development and evaluation of consumer products and services.

Emotions play an important role in consumer behaviour and decisions. Notable efforts are made to characterise the user preferences and emotions evoked by products. Although the positive effect of consumer’s subjective views on concept testing and product success is known, consumers are often unable or unwilling to reveal/report their actual reactions and emotions.

In EATSIGNALS study, the predetermined emotionally pleasant and unpleasant pictures are presented to the participants. Physiological responses and self-reports are collected during the exposure to picture. The physiological data include facial and neck electromyography, galvanic skin reaction, heart rate variability, eye movements and gaze, and skin temperature. Reactions are also recognized by video recording.

VTT funded project is carried out in cooperation with University of Eastern Finland.
