AUGMENTED REALITY IN PRINTED MEDIA AND PACKAGING

VTT has demonstrated how to connect packages interactively with digital media by using augmented reality -technology. Physical package can be linked to digital information with mobile phone cameras providing an opportunity to increase the amount of information in packages as well as adding entertaining features.

Two examples of applications of augmented reality -technology were demonstrated at Interpack: a sixpack with an interactive surprise and a magazine ad making pearl-buying easier, and more tempting, than before.

The sixpack with augmented reality features was designed to be used during rock-festivals. The features include local advertisements, competitions, lyrics for rock songs and an interactive surprise. The features were chosen based on the interviews with the focus group of the drink.

The other example demonstrates how to use augmented reality to boost a magazine advertisement. Jewellery Ad in a fashion magazine contains an interactive element that allows the reader to wear a marker and try glass pearl jewellery in different colors. Before making the purchase decision, the reader may check which color suits her best using her laptop as a virtual mirror.

FARMES CLUB for companies interested in Augmented Reality technology

VTT invites companies interested in the use of Augmented Reality (AR) technology in combination with print products and packages to join the FARMES club. FARMES stands for Future Augmented Reality Media Ecosystem, and the aim of the club is to support companies in getting up-to-date knowledge of the possibilities that AR technology provides for interactive media applications. The aim is also to carry out several demonstrations with the technology with systematic approach to user feedback.
