GREEN ALTERNATIVES TO SYNTHETIC BARRIER MATERIALS IN PACKAGING

Currently, barrier layers in food packaging materials are produced from plastics based on fossil oil. Although functional, these layers present challenges in terms of environmental sustainability and recyclability. VTT aims to develop biobased barriers and hybrid materials to provide green alternatives to synthetic barrier materials in packaging applications.

The utilized biopolymers are modified polysaccharides, such as pectin, starch and hemicellulose.VTT has demonstrated successful pilot scale coating of biohybrid materials with improved oxygen, water vapor and grease barrier properties.

These demonstration packages can be regarded as environmentally sound alternatives to synthetic barrier materials in packaging applications. Demonstration packages were displayed at the Interpack trade fair.
